Monday Morning Lament: Sleepy Canon
A free one-page canon for choirs who know the pain of an early rehearsal.
Originally written for Pimlico Voices, who rehearse at 7:15am on Monday mornings, Monday Morning Lament: Sleepy Canon captures the reluctance, humour and groove of starting the week with choir. This short four-part canon later developed into the full choral work Monday Morning Lament.
With its jazzy feel and layered entries, this canon is both challenging and engaging, making it a fun addition to secondary school, youth or community choir rehearsals. The text may also be adapted to suit your ensemble, whether that means “Tuesday morning,” “Wednesday morning,” or even the universal tragedy of having to wake up for work.
Voicing: Four-part canon
Accompaniment: Flexible (chord symbols)
Difficulty: Moderate
Themes: Monday mornings, early rehearsals, reluctant waking, choir humour
Language: English
Suitable for: Secondary school choirs, youth choirs, community choirs, warm-ups, part-singing practice
