Written for Pimlico Voices, Monday Morning Lament is a humorous and highly theatrical choral work that captures the rude shock of the early alarm, the fog of half-sleep, and the slow resignation of being awake. Beginning with an exaggerated alarm-clock soundscape, the piece invites singers to embrace ugly semitone clashes, forward twangy tone, and plenty of comic drama before settling into a jazzy waltz swing.
The accompaniment is intentionally flexible and not fully notated, giving performers freedom to establish the groove and respond creatively to the ensemble. Piano, guitar or organ may be used, with percussion or other jazz instrumentation able to be added to expand the sound world.
